In England the body responsible for designating SSSIs is Natural England, which chooses a site because of its fauna, flora, geological or physiographical features.〔(【引用サイトリンク】work=English Nature )〕 Hereford and Worcester was a county from 1974 to 1998, and it was designated an Areas of Search by Natural England until the 2010s. As of 2014 the counties are separate areas of search, but this list has not been updated to reflect this revision by Natural England. , there are 189 sites designated in this Area of Search.〔(【引用サイトリンク】work=English Nature )〕 There are 27 sites with a purely geological interest, and 154 listed for biological interest. A further 8 sites are designated for both reasons. Natural England took over the role of designating and managing SSSIs from English Nature in October 2006 when it was formed from the amalgamation of English Nature, parts of the Countryside Agency and the Rural Development Service.
